Ten Years.

Ten years ago today I was sitting in a hotel lobby at a professional conference, trying to fill a long gap between sessions. On a whim I decided to create a website to chronicle my road trip adventures. As I relayed in The Ten-Year Top Ten, I sat in that lobby and threw together my first ever post. With the encouragement of some supportive friends, I pressed publish.

2012 Honda Accord coupe, parked in front of Roadside America.
Through the past ten years, there have been some memorable stops, such as the now-defunct Roadside America, one man’s attempt to built the world’s largest (and quirkiest!) indoor miniature village.

This blog has been part of my life through five jobs, five moves, and a marriage. The 2012 Honda Accord that was featured in my original post was replace 2.5 years ago by a 2020 Acura TLX. Much has changed, but this blog has been a constant.

My old 2012 Accord coupe… gone but not forgotten. The absolute highlight of my ownership was rolling 200,000 miles on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.

So this post is just a note of thanks to all of you who have taken the time to read about my trips to the Jersey shore, Adirondack State Park, the World’s Largest Duck, the World’s Largest Grandfather Clock, battleships, national parks, waterfalls, mountaintops, and so much more.

View of lake, forests, and mountains from summit of Blue Mountain.
This blog has chronicled numerous visits to Adirondack State Park in upstate New York. One of my absolute highlights was when I climbed to the summit of Blue Mountain.

Over 26,000 unique visitors have come to The Open Road Ahead, and the site has been viewed 50,100 times. Including this post, I have pressed publish 314 times in the last ten years – an average of almost 32 posts per year!

Steam locomotive at Steamtown National Historic Site.
So many amazing adventures… like my visit to Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA.

So thank you again for all of your supportive messages, encouraging notes, and constructive feedback. What began as a one-off experiment has turned into a part of my life that I greatly enjoy: sharing my road trips with you.

Rainbow over beach in Cape May, New Jersey.
And this post wouldn’t be complete without a view of Cape May… and a good luck rainbow too.

As the tenth year kicks off, stay tuned for an epic adventure that my wife and I have planned for later this month, along with a few smaller trips before then. And as always, thanks for taking the time to read this post as we travel down the open road ahead.

‘Til next time.
